Guided Reading

Guided Reading

Guided Reading is the core component of the GirlSMART literacy program. It is one of the most important activities a student can engage in since it builds students’ ability to read fluently.  Reading fluency involves the rate at which a student reads, their accuracy and their prosody (expression and phrasing). It also develops the skills they need to problem solve as they read.

Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with  a small group of students who demonstrate similar reading behaviors and can read similar levels of texts. The text is easy enough for students to read with a teacher’s skillful support; it offers challenges and opportunities for problem solving, but is easy enough for students to read with some fluency.

The key steps to guided reading are:

  1. Introduce text
  2. Introduce focal words
  3. Book walk
  4. Teacher read
  5. Students Read
  6. Students Reread
  7. Read text on your own
  8. Review focal words
  9. Mark up focal words on book
  10. Flashcards
  11. Dictation
  12. Comprehension questions
