Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate sounds (phonemes) in spoken language. Students who have strong phonemic awareness can name words that rhyme and identify beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. Blending and segmenting words are two of the most common phonemic awareness activities used with pre-kinder, kindergarten and first grade students.
